Cloth diapers: actually not horrible.

Our baby is very, very big. 11 pounds, 4 ounces, and over 23″ long.

There’s nothing particularly difficult about cloth diapers, in case anyone reading is wondering. They take up a little more room than disposables, which means that our existing diaper pail seems a bit small — but that’s a good thing, because it means that we’re reminded to empty the pail and do laundry on a fairly regular basis.

Sophie’s been pooping frequently and copiously, and yet it’s still not too onerous: one cycle in cold water without soap, another cycle in hot water (with soap, this time), and a run through the dryer. The latches and snaps aren’t nearly as simple to operate as the amazing “super-stick-anywhere” tabs on modern disposables, and I worry sometimes that we’re squeezing or pinching Sophie when we fasten her into some of the smaller diapers, but it’s not that much of an issue; figure an extra thirty or forty seconds per change, really. One thing that is vitally important to remember, though, is that you can’t just toss these diapers somewhere when you’re done with them; that sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised how often we’ve forgotten the corollary — which is that, as a consequence, you need to bring some kind of waterproof container with you everywhere to hold the dirty diapers, unless you fancy asking everyone you meet for a plastic bag. We’ve started keeping just such a bag with the rest of our diaper-changing utilities in the bottom of the stroller; I’ve begun to think of it as a kind of Baby Toolkit.
