What we have here is a failure to communicate.

It turns out that sitz(s) baths are very nice, but are not in fact the Second Coming of Fizzy Christ. Still, it helped structure our evening — which is something that I can tell is going to be an issue. Our day has already started to revolve around feedings, poopings, and the occasional hour of de-fussing. It means that Christy and I have started staggering our naps, reading magazines when we can, and basically not doing much of anything else. I know enough parents to know that this is perfectly normal, and one of the obvious consequences of having a newborn baby, and yet there’s a part of me that wishes I could explain to Sophie, “Hey, Daddy’s trying to get some writing done. Could you hold off on that burpy gas thing for a minute, and I’ll be right with you to let you crawl all over my face when I’m done?”

Oh, yeah, I haven’t mentioned this, but Sophie likes nothing more when in the middle of one of those frantic screaming fits — the ones that actually dry her mouth out, because she’s had it open so long — than to be placed on my upper chest and lightly patted on the bottom while she tries her darndest to crawl up to the top of my head, using my chin and nose as handholds. I can’t tell whether she’s going to be a rockclimber or a jaguar when she grows up.

Sitz and spin.

I got back from the cafeteria (salad and a chili dog; I’m clearly not taking my weight-loss regimen seriously enough) and watched the last ten minutes of that breastfeeding video with Christy. Sophie’s been sleeping like an angel for two hours, curled up in the nook of her mother’s arm, and Christy started nodding off herself about five minutes ago. I figure that Sophie does one or two good, long sleeps a day, so I’m going to do what I can to encourage Christy to rest during those same periods. We’d like to try a sitz (possibly “sits;” I can’t tell if it’s a deliberate pun or not) bath some time soon; it comes highly recommended by some of the other mothers here. Sophie was asleep and Christy was in the bathroom when we first called the nurse, but (as has happened so often when we’ve tried to get something done here), Sophie was wailing and Christy was in the middle of breastfeeding when the nurse showed up. We actually repeated this process about three times before we successfully managed to communicate “we would like a fizzy bath thingy” to someone.

There is seriously a niche here.

Three points: 1) If you’re done watching a video, rewind it. I recognize, as I write this, that there may be people out there now who have never watched anything in the VHS format and might not actually understand the whole concept of rewinding, but I’d like to think that these people are still too young to be watching instructional breastfeeding tapes. 2) Hospitals should buy VCRs that have pause buttons. The VCRs should also have some kind of “turbo rewind” option while play is stopped — or should at least be able to rewind at regular speed while stopped. They should definitely not offer a “turbo rewind” option that requires someone to hit Play, then hold down the Rewind button for the entire duration of the rewinding operation. 3) There is no likely downside to basic video editing. Even if you have filmed the best, most perfect panel discussion in history, with clever comments and excellent demonstrations, the video will still be improved if you cut out, for example, the bit where the panel is over and everyone turns to the camera in awkward silence while waiting for somebody to press the Stop button. Blessed and lucky.

Our baby is, as of the last nurse’s visit, perfectly normal in all ways. The initial terror has worn off enough that I can be disappointed by this; I’d’ve thought that my baby would have been considered obviously exceptional, the kind of baby that nurses call other nurses in to see and say, “Remember this day. Remember this baby.” But I guess it’s not my fault that Sophie has been put on Earth during a shortage of observant nurses. Read More »
